Spartan Perk is a coffee shop created by Community School of Davidson (CSD) High School to help fund school programs. It is run by students and located in the commons area, the center area for studying and eating.
It sells hot and cold coffee flavored with different syrups along with a variety of muffins like chocolate and pumpkin, plus plain and cinnamon bagels.
As far as food, Spartan Perk also sells breakfast sandwiches.
Spartan Perk sells special items, too. It sells pumpkin syrup drinks during fall and candy cane syrup drinks during winter. Chai tea and also Sparty Shakes (milkshakes) are the most popular all throughout the year. During the 8th block the chocolate muffins seem to be the most popular item.
Spartan Perk is run by students and open during 1st period , 2nd period , Jumpstart and 8th period Monday- Thursday. It’s busiest during jumpstart.
Laura Daily, CSD teacher, says something she thinks has changed the most in Spartan Perk’s three years is the variety in the menu.
“We started selling just hot and cold coffee, then we expanded to sell bagels, muffins, and Sparty Shakes,” Laura Daly said.
She also thinks the student employees have gained more independence and they are operating as real employees.
The drinks are put together by the workers who have been trained to mix in the right amounts.
Prices are cheaper at Spartan Perk than at regular coffee shops. Muffins and coffees are $2 each while milkshakes are $3.
Working at Spartan Perk has benefits. Aside from the fun students have while working there, they each get a free item every shift they work.
Marley Samson (‘27) is a student employee, shares why he likes working there.
“I’d have to say the free items you get after working a shift and how nice they are to you,” Marley Sampson said.
Spartan Perk is celebrating three years of being open and has become a part of the day to day school culture.
