On May 6, 2026, the Community School of Davidson (CSD) art department and Spartans Arts Supporters (SAS) hosted Open Gallery Night to display the creative minds and end-of-year art of students from all high school art classes.
Every year, CSD’s arts staff works to come up with a broad theme to inspire the art that will be showcased. This year, the theme was Between Forms.
“Usually at the end of the year, art teachers come up with open-ended questions as a theme. We had options but we felt like between forms represented how we change as high-schoolers. Also there are many ways to interpret it and we want to leave as much freedom as possible,” art teacher Miki Kato-Starr said.
This year’s event also marked a lighting milestone. It was the first Open Gallery Night featuring new gallery lighting in the Arts Commons. CSD’s Spartan Arts Supporters (SAS) fundraised for the lighting with their “Shine the Spotlight” campaign.
The Open Gallery Night didn’t just provide another opportunity for students to show off their art, it also helped them to bond with their teachers over creative, possibly difficult projects.
“I really enjoyed working with William Skaggs on a truck he made because there was a challenge on how to make it,” woodshop teacher Bobby Hardin said.
In addition to physical art, the exhibition also included painting and drawing, photography, dance, performing art, music and an interactive drawing station.
For CSD’s Class of 2026 seniors, many of whom began their art explorations in the lower and middle schools, the end-of-year Open Gallery Night provided one final opportunity to exhibit their work before graduation.
