On the day CSD students returned from spring break 2026, administration shared a Parent Square note to seniors and their families about an event called the senior skip day. The note outlined the school’s position and reinforced the rules around attending school, participating in activities, and making choices.
The day has both an unofficial and an official meeting so the school needed to get clarification to the public.
Unofficially, it is the day members of the senior graduating class choose to do something other than come to school.
Officially, it is a day like every other where attendance is required in order to participate in activities and complete academic related work.
While the school does not sanction the event, it nevertheless happens with some students choosing to skip and others choosing to attend.
What are the pros and cons of the day? Is there a solution that might make everyone happy?
CSD journalists look at both sides of the issue…

Popular Opinion – Embrace senior skip day because, in less than a month, students will never be able to do it again
The senior skip day is a popular tradition. It’s been around in various forms since the 1930s, and it gives students the opportunity to make memories. Twenty years from now, the senior class may not remember a random day at school. However, they will remember time spent with friends getting lunch, bowling, or hanging out by the lake.
The end of the school year is always a busy time for academics so a break is good. Teachers are preparing their students for final exams and students need to review content along with completing homework and participating in extracurricular activities. Senior skip day provides the seniors with a chance to mentally reset, take a breath and get ready for the final stretch of the school year.
The skip day can be an opportunity for students to connect with each other. After graduation, college, work and other post high school plans can get in the way. Many of the seniors have seen each other every day for the past few years, but may never cross paths again after graduation. Skipping school together on a designated day is not just a fun activity but also a chance to show camaraderie with the fellow members of your class.
One consideration is that the seniors will likely participate in a skipping day of some sort, whether announced or unannounced. It might even be better if the seniors announce the day so that seniors can plan around it rather than having to guess when it will be, since it is a senior tradition at many schools. The school could instead advocate for fewer senior skip days rather than for none at all.
Another consideration is that some teachers are supportive of the movement even though they may not show it professionally. Many may look the other way or remember their time back in high school when they did the same.

Unpopular Opinion – The end of year is a crazy time and all students need to be in school as much as possible
For student athletes, the ability to participate in after school athletics depends on the student’s attendance at school that day. Seniors who skip school may not be able to attend practice, and in some cases, will not be able to play in their games later that week.
Once teachers hear about the planned senior skip day, they try their best to bring students back into class. They do this through offering extra credit for students who do attend, or planning quizzes and tests on the same day. Students who need an extra boost to their grade or can’t afford to miss a test risk hurting their grade by skipping school.
It can disrupt schedules as teachers have to plan around it. Many teachers are getting ready to have their final exams in the upcoming weeks, before AP testing takes place. With the skip day, teachers may need to reschedule finals to give their students ample time to review.
It can disrupt the teacher and students’ rhythm at the end of the year. Teachers may not feel like they are able to trust their seniors if the seniors aren’t attending class, and it can leave a negative impact on the relationship between teachers and students as the seniors get ready to leave.
Another thing that can be disruptive from senior skip day is that teachers may feel like students don’t care about their class or it could create an image of students feeling burned out which could instead be communicated with the upper school.
A solution, as the journalism team sees it, is that the answer is not black and white, it can be both.

Students should participate in senior skip day to take time to be with friends and do fun activities but keep in mind that you still have responsibilities.
On the day CSD students returned from spring break, administration shared a Parent Square note to seniors and their families about an event called the senior skip day. This year, senior skip day was on Tuesday April 14, the second day back from spring break, and that gave seniors the chance to come back to school, get re-settled and then plan and execute an activity as a group.
This gave seniors a chance to not only skip school while everyone else was there but to hangout with friends on a day you normally wouldn’t. As graduation comes closer students want to spend as much time together as possible.
It allows seniors to have fun and take a day off from school while also knowing that there are consequences. Although there are downsides to skipping, senior skip day is not an excused absence so you will be marked absent from each class you missed that day and on top of that teachers assign work just as if it’s a regular day. Enforcing those rules while also giving students a choice teachers responsibility.
Most teachers don’t enjoy this day due to the amount of absences in their class and most seniors aren’t going to do the work assigned because they have other fun activities planned and school work isn’t one of them. This gives the students who do attend more time with the teacher and it forces seniors to complete the work on their own.
Senior skip day should definitely be an option at every school but students should also keep in mind that there are responsibilities and consequences that come with it.
