North Carolina is a diverse state not just geographically, with mountains and the ocean just a few hours apart, but also anywhere you look in the sports scene.
There are great athletes that came from North Carolina in almost every sport around the country, plus teams, programs and organizations that trace back to the Tarheel State and color the map shades of blue. From great basketball programs at UNC and Duke to being the home of NASCAR and producing Super Bowl level quarterbacks.
Let’s start locally in the Charlotte and Davidson area. High school and college to be specific. Some great athletes come from the Charlotte area including Gabby Cunningham, an Olympic track athlete, and Huntersville’s, Drake Maye, to the NBA’s Steph Curry. Curry not only grew up and went to high school in Charlotte, he also played division one basketball at Davidson College.
Charlotte is also home to the US National Whitewater Center (USNWC). The USNWC boasts the world’s largest manmade whitewater river and is home to many training Olympians. Four time canoe slalom Olympian, Casey Eichfeld, has called Charlotte home since the Whitewater Center opened decades ago, and is still training for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Speaking of the USNWC, in 2021, the Center hosted the Canoe and Kayak Olympic trials.
And for many CSD students and others in the Charlotte area, the Whitewater center is a fun weekend hangout spot about 30 minutes from home.
Now let’s expand the scope. If you drive less than three hours in every direction away from Charlotte and Lake Norman, you will run into even more sports fame.
The rivalry between Duke and UNC Chapel Hill is widely considered the biggest, most intense rivalry in college basketball. The teams have met 267 times in men’s basketball, UNC taking 141 wins, leaving Duke with 121. Though UNC has historically had an advantage, recent years have shown Duke taking more wins.
Throughout North Carolina, fans can be seen sporting merch in favor of both schools year round. Matchups between the two teams draw some of the highest viewership of college basketball, and frequently surpass NBA games. One February 2026 game drew 3.5 million viewers, the highest in four years for the rivalry.
The coast of North Carolina is home to even more athletes such as Micheal Jordan, who was born in Wilmington and attended Laney High school before enrolling at UNC Chapel Hill. Jordan has made 6 appearances in NBA championships winning all of them, and is considered the best basketball player of all time.
Ever heard of the professional boxer Ray Leonard? Sugar Ray was born in Wilmington, as well, and with 38 fights he only lost 3. A champion across 5 divisions, he is considered one of the best professional boxers ever.
And to the far west, up in the mountains near Asheville, Boone and Blowing Rock, where rivers and trails toughen athletes, Mountain culture defines athletics. From Asheville to Boone is especially magical with great views, and excellent areas to explore. Asheville offers great scenic views of mountaintops and valleys, perfect for a summer vacation, to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. While Boone proposes an extraordinary experience with the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking at Grandfather Mountain is an excuse to get out and do something in the morning.
Lastly, there is arguably no other state in the nation that does NASCAR and motorsport racing like North Carolina. From Dale Earnhardt, Sr. to Richard Petty, North Carolina is the home of NASCAR legends that are contained in the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte. Many younger drivers, as well as many of the motorsports industry’s teams are all based here, too.
So, with all due respect to states like Florida, Texas, California, Alaska and even Colorado, North Carolina has all of that and more in one place.
