There is one week every October at the Community School of Davidson (CSD) High School that is unlike any other. It marks a change from regular academic classes and is meant to bring the students closer and promote school spirit.
Even the teachers are more relaxed and look forward to the change.
To Sara Behnke, AP Language and Creative Writing teacher, the homecoming festivities give her advisory a chance to bond.
“As a teacher, it’s crazy, and it’s a lot of work, and I’m always exhausted at the end of the day, but I also feel like that’s the day my advisory really gels and comes together because they’re all working on a collective task,” Sara Behnke said.

Homecoming is the weeklong celebration of Spartan spirit that combines in school activities with extracurriculars and sports plus a parade, a pep rally and a school dance.
Homecoming 2025 started with Spirit Week wear; each academic day of the week was assigned a theme by Student Government.
Monday was “Mix it Up Monday” where students dressed as their teachers, wearing cardigans, dress shirts, and ties. Teachers wore hoodies, pajamas and sweatpants to mimic their students.
There was no school on Tuesday because sophomores and juniors took the PSAT.
Wednesday was “Who’s Who Wednesday” where students coordinated outfits with their friends from matching colors to floral shirts.
Thursday’s theme was “Team Up Thursday” and students wore jerseys of their favorite teams.
And Friday was all about advisory, building floats, the annual parade and the pep rally. This year’s float theme was “Cartoons and TV Shows.” Students and teachers dressed up as their favorite TV characters and designed floats inspired by their selected shows.
The pep rally had games where students competed by teams by grade level. Games included basketball musical chairs and granny pants. The junior and senior boys then competed in a volleyball game, with the junior boys winning in the end.

Connor Cassell (‘28) enjoys the spirit themes of Homecoming week.
“My favorite part of Homecoming week is probably the spirit stuff,” Connor Cassell said. “My favorite day was the twin day, because I dressed as a performative male.”
After the school week ended, Homecoming shifted to Spartan Park where the football team took on Lincoln Charter and won 49 – 7. The theme for the student section was neon to match the high energy of the crowd.
Returning to school on a Saturday is rare, but that’s what Spartans do during Homecoming. Homecoming 2025 ended with a semi formal dance complete with a DJ. The theme for this year’s dance was “Mirror Ball.” Students danced late into the night before heading home to wrap up this year’s Homecoming celebrations.
Homecoming typically happens right before fall break so once the chaos subsides, students have a chance to unwind and remember the week of fun and memories.
