Artist Statement —-
“Inside My Mind” shows the natural system of the human brain. The brain is a system of knowledge and emotions. The effects of the brain’s systems can cause chaos. The emotions we feel throughout our life and the deterioration of the organ that controls us can be insane. Loss of control over the brain is a horrifying experience. As dementia and mental illness afflict people, this causes chaos unlike any other. Even though mental illness is more talked about now than it once was, an extremely damaging stigma against it still remains. The issue of mental health is extremely personal to me as most of my family suffers from issues that cause extra stress to everyday life. Mental health must be looked after closely and many who are affected ignore the illness that causes so much pain. With certain treatment mental health can be pushed to the side and easier to deal with. When people look at my piece I want them to feel a mild discomfort. My piece is meant to make you think. I want people to interpret the meaning of my art. I don’t care if they get the same feeling I did but I want them to recognize the emotion behind it.
My piece is a human brain slowly decaying. It is growing moss and vines as it dies while something else is living off it. My purple flower on the front of my piece is meant to show the beauty and hope that can come from horrible and tough situations.
