With the fall season in the rearview as a couple of teams made runs towards state championships, Spartan athletes are taking it indoors as the winter season gets underway. CSD Spartans will compete these next few months in indoor track, swim and men’s/women’s basketball while the cheer team will continue.
The basketball cheer team is comprised of the same cheerleaders as the football cheer team because all cheerleaders are expected to participate in both seasons. There are 22 total cheerleaders, including eight freshmen, 10 sophomores, three juniors and one senior who will cheer on the court.
“I am excited for this upcoming basketball season so that we can continue to show our new skills to our school and because I’m really proud of all my teammates,” said Wesley Little (‘25), one of the team captains.
Indoor track returns this winter in the sport’s first year with the new head coach, Shaina Burns. Burns has been an assistant coach in past years but was named head coach as of this year. The team is composed of a total of 27 athletes, including nine freshman, five sophomores, seven juniors and six seniors.
CSD’s two- time state title winning swim team is also back for another season. Three-peat? Sounds like an awesome goal. The swim team boasts 37 athletes including seven freshmen, 13 sophomores, three juniors and 14 seniors.
“I am most excited to get to know my team and to grow as a swimmer,” said freshman swimmer, Lelia McQuaid (‘27).
The women’s varsity basketball team comes into this season set to score with a team of 12 girls, including four freshmen, five juniors and three seniors.
“I am most excited to get back in the gym and play the amazing game of basketball,” said Colette Morsell (‘25). “New season, new team and new coach. Everyone is hyped and we want to go far,”
Men’s basketball returns, too, with both a varsity team and a junior varsity team this year. The JV team consists of 14 young players, including seven freshman, five sophomores and two juniors. The varsity team has 12 players, including two sophomores, six juniors and four seniors.
In total, 124 student athletes across all four classes will represent and promote Spartan spirit through winter sports during the 2023-24 season.
