Lindsey In is not only in her first year at Community School of Davidson (CSD) High School, she’s trying out a new position, too. Having spent the last 8 years teaching 5th grade Math & Science at Lake Norman Charter (LNC), In is getting to experience the behind-the-scenes aspect of educational technology as CSD’s new Instructional Facilitator. While Mark Houlihan handles the hardware part of technology at CSD, In does the software part, helping with educational programs like Clever and more. Away from technology, In is passionate about the environment and was the supervisor of LNC’s Earth Club which led initiatives like recycling education and other projects to get everyone at her former school involved in protecting our earth. Also at LNC, she was involved in initiatives like Girls on The Run, a lesson for 5th graders by 5/3rd bank about finance and a presentation on recycling for all 5th grade students. She and her family like to get outside in places like the Whitewater Center and Carowinds.
What do you like to do with free time?
I like to cook, get outside and learn about different cultures by going to different festivals around town.
What’s one thing everyone should know about you?
I genuinely love education. I feel very passionate about supporting education and learning how I can help with everything that’s changing in education.
Chocolate or fruity candy?
Chocolate.
Why did you decide to come to CSD?
The community here is amazing. It was a great opportunity for me career wise to step outside of the classroom and help assist teachers with educational tech tools.
What has surprised you about CSD so far this year?
The culture here is actually what everyone thinks it is. I think one major thing to note that’s different here is the teachers genuinely build a connection with their students. The environment overall is so student centric. Every kid feels like they truly belong here, and they’re made to feel that way. It was also refreshing to see how trusted teachers are here and how much autonomy they’re given.
What’s your favorite place on Earth?
I love the Great Lakes in northern Michigan in the summertime.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.” – Thoreau
Can you tell me about a role model who has made a difference in your life?
Shannon Stein, the superintendent at Lake Norman Charter. And Dr. Cherie Graham, who became a principal at LNC middle school.
If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Tacos or nachos.
What are some differences and/or similarities between teaching in a classroom vs tech support?
I’m not used to working with so many different people instead of being focused on one classroom. I love that because I’m getting to see all these really cool things happening across the whole district instead of just in one grade level or one school.
Board games or card games?
Card games.
What CSD tradition are you most excited for this year? (Service Fridays, Spartan Day, Homecoming Parade, etc.)
I’m really excited about the service component, and seeing how many students are getting out into the community to serve others.
