As temperatures rise with the approaching spring months, so does Spartan enthusiasm for the upcoming season. Community School of Davidson’s 2025 spring sports offer a range of sports as athletes break out from winter’s indoor competitions and under the sun on the courts, fields, track and golf course. Spring sports are a great opportunity to form bonds, push physical boundaries and just get outside.
There are 157 athletes participating in spring sports this year, all equally hyped for the season. The most athletes are in men’s lacrosse at 39 and women’s lacrosse has the most athletes in their short team history at 17. Men’s golf has the smallest team at nine, however that is a good amount for a golf team comparatively.
Parents, friends and even teachers are excited for the upcoming season.
“I enjoy watching spring sports although I don’t really know anything about lacrosse,” Community School of Davidson history teacher Anthony Yodice said.
Despite lacrosse being the “football of spring sports,” students are equally excited about other sports such as women’s soccer and combined track and field.
Outdoor Track and Field
24 athletes hit the track this year hoping to live up to the successes of the 2024 outdoor track season with the many qualifications to the state meet. Relays that qualified last season include the 4×800 team of Taylor Worley (‘25), Marin Sullivan (‘24), Lily Miller (‘24) and Ana Teckenbrock (‘24).
Women’s Soccer
This spring 24 athletes take the field for women’s varsity soccer. The team is led by seniors Ellie Puma, Julia Vecchiarello and Lexi Shields. Underclassmen build the core with eight 10th graders and nine 9th graders.
“I love participating in soccer, just being a part of a team is the most important thing about spring sports to me,” Kendall Hammett (‘26) said. “You can learn so much about life from teammates, a sport or a coach.”
Men’s Baseball
The junior varsity and varsity baseball teams have seniors Ben Gallagher, Conner Shelton and Austin Moran, a Dartmouth commit on a scholarship, providing leadership. With five juniors and nine sophomores, the team is hopes to beat their previous seasons win rate of 57%.
The players are teeming with excitement to play a full season on their new Spartan Park field.
“I am super pumped about this season. Not only because it’s my senior season but also because we finally have our own field. We can use the field as long as the sun stays up and we have a home field that actually feels like home when we play on it,” Ben Gallagher (‘25) said. “We also have a chance to go far in states this year which is always exciting.”
Men’s Tennis
The 2025 men’s tennis roster consists of 14 athletes, six of which are freshmen. In the previous season they won over 50% of games however it is hard to predict this season with so many new players.
Men’s Golf
Nine athletes tee it up on the course this year, a considerable number for a golf team. Seniors Owen Hamilton, Porter Adkins and Ethon Fox lead the season followed by six underclassmen. Last year no athletes qualified for regionals or states but hopefully the team will see some low qualifying scores this spring.
Women’s Lacrosse
17 athletes are playing varsity lacrosse including five seniors and many new to the lacrosse team players, too. Last season the team made it to round four of states and this year’s overall positive attitude and hard work is guaranteed to get them further.
“The team atmosphere is really friendly and I felt welcomed from the beginning, which is somewhat new to me in sports. I didn’t feel like I had to work my way into the group, even though I knew almost nobody on the team.” Elena Cunningham (‘27) said.
Men’s Lacrosse
The varsity and junior varsity men’s lacrosse team combined has 39 athletes, the most of any spring sport. Last season they finished with an 86% win rate breaking their team and conference record. With four seniors and ten juniors, the Spartans are excited to see if this season will follow (or surpass) the success of last spring.
