As Halloween 2024 creeps up on CSD, the Journalism class has been hard at work not so much following the real news but instead thinking about what their top picks of Halloween candy are this year.
Many aspects make the spookiest holiday loved and cherished, including decorations, costumes, pop culture, etc, but candy is among the most memorable. Trick-or-treating is a childhood staple and candy is the best reward for combing the neighborhood and ringing doorbells. When it is time to turn on that scary movie at the end of the night, what you want in your lap isn’t hot buttered popcorn, it’s Halloween candy.
North Carolina’s favorite Halloween candy is candy corn but CSD journalists have different opinions.
A pair of CSD journalists give high ranks to sweet candy choices.
“My favorite candy is Laffy Taffy,” Kate Saussele (‘25) said. “I grew up on saltwater taffy up in Michigan. Anywhere I traveled, my mom and I would buy a big bag and eat it for months. Laffy Taffy is similar to that, but nobody gives them out anymore and they aren’t super popular. I wish they got more recognition.”
Sophomore, Elena Cunningham, also goes the sweet, gummy route.
“My favorite Halloween candy is Swedish Fish,” Elena Cunningham (‘27) said. “I’m allergic to dairy so a lot of common Halloween candy I can’t have and I know Swedish Fish is safe. It’s interesting because in recent years I have found out a lot of people don’t like them.”
For those trying to eat well, M&Ms are the healthiest pick for Halloween candy.
But chocolate comes with a cost. Cocoa prices have gone up which has prompted candymakers to increase gummy production this year.
Whether or not they are aware of these facts, a few CSD journalists love M&M’s and other chocolate candy.
“My favorite Halloween candy is probably M&M’s because they’re very versatile,” Brandon Amaya (‘25) said. “You can put it into ice cream which is what I like to do. I like the taste of it, and I like how they’re small so you don’t feel like you’re eating that much. I remember going to a house and they had only M&M’s and I was very happy because that was one of my favorite ones, so I grabbed three packs just from one house and they were big packs.”
Sophomore, Macy Balmat, also prefers chocolate.
“My favorite Halloween candy is Butterfingers because I never get to eat them,” Macy Balmat (‘27) said. “My father would always steal them out of my bag.”
As for these writers, we both love sour candy. Our favorites are Sour Patch Kids (one of the top ranked Halloween candy choices in the United States) and Warheads. We believe that sour candy may be the most delicious way to go this Halloween season to save money and enjoy tasty candy.
