Fun senior year backpacks are sweeping the hallways and brightening everybody’s days. As a new trend, class of ‘25 seniors are now sporting fun “kiddie” backpacks for their final year in high school to remember that a big component of learning should be fun.
Backpacks are a staple of every high school supply list. Students need to be able to carry their books, their water bottles and every other miscellaneous earbud, pencil, chapstick and miscellaneous item a kid in school could want or need.
Backpack style starts early and changes through the years. Often, kindergarteners come to school with colorful backpacks of their favorite movie characters or fun bedazzled designs. As time passes, the basic black backpack takes over. In high school halls, very rarely is a book bag backpack anything bright or exciting.
But a new trend is breaking the mold. Seniors are buying kid-themed backpacks and using them for their final year in high school. People’s favorite characters from when they were kids, foods, and animals are all making appearances and comebacks. They are brightening up the halls of schools everywhere, including at Community School of Davidson (CSD) high school.
Each CSD senior backpack has a unique story behind it and a reason for its purchase. Be it a senior wanting to remember their childhood, wanting a fun backpack printed with something they love, or simply wanting to fit in with the trend, senior backpacks have quickly become a fun way to brighten up the day.
Holden Pharr’s (’25) backpack is the epitome of a kid themed backpack. Reflective and colorful, the backpack catches the eye. Sonic is a beloved character from many kids’ childhoods and Pharr was no exception. “I loved Sonic as a kid. He was fast and funny and I thought he was the best. This year I heard everybody else was getting a fun backpack so I immediately wanted one of Sonic,” said Pharr. (Ben Gallagher)
“Who doesn’t love pizza?” said Hayden Rouleau (‘25). Rouleau’s senior backpack is covered in slices of pizza and everybody is a fan of it. “Every time I see Hayden’s backpack I think about how much I like it because pizza’s the best,” said Conner Shelton (‘25). Rouleau’s take on a fun senior backpack is unique and that’s what makes it special to him. (Ben Gallagher)
Peppa Pig and music. Who doesn’t love that combo? Taylor Worley’s (‘25) book bag at first glance appears to be a regular black backpack but a second glance shows that it is a cute kindergartener backpack through and through. Peppa Pig is favorite among toddlers and pre-k kids and Taylor Worley, too. “Peppa Pig was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid and I got this backpack because I don’t want to let go of my childhood because I’m not ready to graduate,” Worley said. Barbie has become the stereotypical tween girl’s toy. The beloved doll donning pink clothes is a symbol of childhood for girls. Beck Parker (‘25) couldn’t agree more. Parker said, “None of the backpacks for people my age are fun and I wanted a fun backpack. Barbie was the logical choice. She’s fun, pink and sparkly…Exactly what I wanted in a book bag.” (Ben Gallagher)
Sometimes, people get caught up in trends without really loving the idea but come around to the idea after a while. Brandon Albert (‘25) is an example of this. “I didn’t really want to get a senior backpack but all my friends made be get one and I settled on Marvel…I’m glad I did, though. I really like mine now,” said Albert. (Ben Gallagher)
“Dude, what’s better than a cat backpack?” said Ethan Fox (‘25). “They’re the best.” Fox’s backpack is an adorable example of a senior backpack. Fox adores cats. His Kahoot name – an online game teachers use to review for tests – is a smiling cat made of characters on the computer. He has multiple cats at home and a cat backpack is simply the logical senior backpack. “I couldn’t not have one. It just wouldn’t feel right to have something other than a cat,” said Fox. (Ben Gallagher)
There is no more iconic magical creature than the unicorn. It embodies childhood wonder and belief in such creatures. “I love unicorns and I wanted a fun backpack so it seemed like the right pick,” said Darby Camp (‘25). Camp’s backpack sparkles around the halls and brightens everyone’s day who sees it. (Ben Gallagher)
”The Princess and the Frog” is a classic Disney movie and Tiana doesn’t fail to back up the Disney princess legacy. “I wanted a fun book bag for senior year because it brings the fun back to school…it was so fun as a kid and I want senior year to be the same way.” (Ben Gallagher)
A whole Disney princess lineup is hard to beat. Disney’s magic captivates kids. The characters are kids’ heroes, the setting is one of a childhood dream and the stories are funny and spellbinding. Amanda Moran (‘25) thought about all this when she bought her backpack. “I wanted to bring back my childhood to school and nothing compares to the Disney movies, or the princesses,” Moran said. Spiderman is cool. Everybody agrees on this and Kate Saussele (’25) is no exception. When asked why she chose Spiderman, she answered, “I was Spiderman a few years ago for Halloween and it was the least lame thing I could think of.” She’s not a total fan of the backpack, however. “It breaks super easy. I’ve had to sew it like twenty times.” (Ben Gallagher)
Ben Gallagher is a senior who has been attending CSD since eighth grade. He is looking forward to his fourth and final year as a part of the Journalism team and hopes it’s the best year yet. This year in the class, he wants to branch out from the usual stories he writes and explore styles such as opinion pieces, podcasts and photo stories.
When not at school, Ben is often found on the sports field. Baseball and recently football take up the majority of his calendar and he loves it. On the diamond he plays middle infield and outfield while in football he plays receiver and free safety.
Outside of school, Ben enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, eating food and spending time outdoors. His favorite books are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Hobbit. His mom’s lasagna is his favorite food.
