Cam Newton Not Back In Blue

Daniel Ahearn

The Carolina Panthers looked to Cam Newton mid-season for a burst of energy when Sam Darnold got hurt. Newton, returning alongside his former teammates, could not have played worse. Newton is now 0-15 in his last 15 starts as a Panther. The Panthers gave him another shot, and now it is time to cut all ties. They should give up multiple first-round picks to get Deshaun Watson via trade from the Houston Texans, even if that includes giving up Christan McCaffery in the trade.

In his six full games since returning to the Panthers, Newton had three passing touchdowns, four running touchdowns, and 684 yards. He fumbled four times and threw five interceptions. One of those interceptions was a pick-six. Newton had the Panthers entangled in his false hope when, in just six snaps, he earned a passing and rushing touchdown in his first game. When the season was all said and done, he had only completed 54% of his passes. Abysmal.

Newton was responsible for ruining multiple weeks of fantasy football for anyone who dared give him a chance. He had 90.2 total fantasy points, which comes to about 12.8 points per game which is far below average for a reliable fantasy QB. Newton was very inconsistent from going to a game with 28 to 7 points the next week. Almost every game, he would start with a good quarter and then fall apart for the rest of the game. I do not see Cam Newton returning to the panthers or to any other team as a starter. The Panthers will need to move on and find a franchise QB that will bring dominance back to the Carolinas.
