Dune: Worth the Wait
November 3, 2021
The plot of newly released movie Dune is set 8,000 years in the future, and tells the story of what happens when an emperor orders Paul Atreides’ (portrayed by record breaking youngest nominee for a Golden Globe Award and 2021 Met Gala co-chair, actor Timothée Chalamet) father, a duke from the House Atreides (portrayed by Golden Globe award nominated actor Oscar Isaac) to leave his home planet Caladan in order to rule over the planet Arrakis.
Inspired by Frank Herbert’s book series, Dune was released into theaters on October 22, 2021. On October 27 a sequel to the movie was officially confirmed and a release date was announced: October 20, 2023. Within the first day of the movie being released, it has scored a milestone opening box office of $40.1 million; flying past previous record holder Godzilla vs. Kong’s $31 million opening at the end of March 2021. Its current total gross globally is $220.7 million. The movie Dune is based on only the first half of the first Dune book, and the sequel will be based on the second half of the first book.
Journalist Riley McAtee, Associate Editor at The Ringer, tweeted “Dune is brilliant. There are so many things in the book I thought would be unfilmable but they shied away from almost nothing. Astounding. My only complaint is that it wasn’t several hours longer.” Many watchers agree with McAtee.
Many people thought Zendaya, a star actor for HBO’s show Euphoria, was going to be in the film more, for she has been in most interviews with the cast and had been promoted as one of the films main characters. To everyone’s surprise, she was only in the film for around 20 minutes. Many people were upset, but according to the Dune books, Zendaya is expected to have a major part in the rest of the movies.
